PortfolioCHECK™
PortfolioCHECK™ is Second Opinion’s portfolio analysis service and provides an unbiased expert opinion on whether or not your investment portfolio is designed to achieve your investment goals. The service comes in two versions: Basic and Standard.
Standard PortfolioCHECK™ is designed for most individuals. It includes a Basic Financial Plan and analyzes investment portfolios based on ten common sense investing principles. Four of the principles deal with investment policy and asset allocation and six principles deal with portfolio implementation:
1. Investment Policy Objectives and Asset Allocation
- Are your goals and expectations realistic and consistent?
- Are you aiming for the right rate of return?
- Do you understand the risks associated with your portfolio?
- Is your portfolio properly diversified?
2. Implementation of Investment Policy and Asset Allocation
- Are you using the correct advice channel?
- Is your portfolio difficult to monitor and rebalance because it is more complicated than necessary?
- Is your investment portfolio income tax efficient?
- Do you receive high quality performance reporting which includes benchmarks?
- Do you have an investment strategy (a plan) that makes you confident you will reach your financial objectives?
- Are the fees you are paying reasonable for the service you are receiving?
Based on our analysis we will grade your portfolio on each of our 10 investment principles. Depending on how your portfolio is constructed, we assign a score from 1 to 5 for each principle and suggest ways to improve your portfolio's score.
Basic PortfolioCHECK™ is designed for individuals who already have a financial plan showing them their target rate of return or for those whose investment portfolios are too small to warrant the cost of the Standard service level.
The Basic PortfolioCHECK™ doesn’t come with a Financial Plan and only focuses on the following 6 principles broken down into two areas:
1. Investment Policy Objectives and Asset Allocation
- Do you understand the risks associated with your portfolio?
- Is your portfolio properly diversified?
2. Implementation of Investment Policy and Asset Allocation
- Is your portfolio difficult to monitor and rebalance because it is more complicated than necessary?
- Is your investment portfolio income tax efficient?
- Do you receive high quality performance reporting which includes benchmarks?
- Are the fees you are paying reasonable for the service you are receiving?
How is our Second Opinion PortfolioCHECK™ different from the opinion of a financial advisor?
- We do not sell investments of any kind, so we are not influenced by the desire to earn commissions by selling a specific investment product(s).
- We do not manage investment accounts and we do not try to switch your investment account away from your existing financial advisor.
- We only provide advice after a thorough analysis of your financial goals and investment portfolio, hard work that most advisors would rather not do.
- We concentrate on the overall investment process, not on the merits of the individual investment products.
- Our opinion is based on experience and education. Warren MacKenzie is a Chartered Accountant, a Certified Financial Planner and a Certified Investment Management Analyst. Ken Hawkins was a portfolio manger, formerly responsible for managing over 500 million dollars for the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan and a top ranked research analyst on Bay Street. We have over 40 years of investment experience between us. We can uncover problems or issues with your investment program that many advisors may overlook.
- Our only source of revenue is the fee you pay – we work only for you!
